Mother Nature has decided to grace us with lots of beautiful powder snow in recent weeks. THIS is the type of winter we are used to and that we had been desperately missing this season. Over my last two "weekends" (Sunday/ Monday) both days have been powder days - and I don't mean wimpy amounts of powder - I mean of the 8 to 11" each day variety. It has snowed on a daily basis and we've only seen sunshine again the last couple of days.

This is such a great deal! Adventure Sessions match you with a top guide and a small group of similarly skilled skiers and riders. Here are the cool parts - you'll go places that you may not have been before, cut lift lines because Adventure Guides are also Vail Snowsports School instructors and pick up tips and technical information along the way.

Vail has never claimed to be cheap. As the largest single ski resort on the continent with endless world-class amenities to boot, it doesn't have to be. However, there are still a few freebies to be had and they aren't lame freebies either. Here are some of our picks:

Snow has returned with a vengeance to Vail! Sunday morning we woke up to 9 inches of fluff on Vail Mountain and it continued to snow all day for an additional 10 inches on Monday morning. Needless to say the Lodge at Lionshead guests were very happy! I skied Sunday and even with just 9 inches the conditions were incredibly different. Groomed runs were covered in powder and runs that were not groomed were thigh-deep in some places. It was AMAZING! My group of friends and I had a ball and skied 'til our legs couldn't take it anymore.

Both Vail and Beaver Creek are celebrating National Safety Awareness Week this week and there have been some pretty cool events on the mountains. Have dreams of being a ski patroller? Want to learn how to avoid injuries so you can spend more time on the hill? Want to see an air ambulance helicopter up close and personal? It's not too late - you still have two days to check it out and learn some great safety tips. Here is what is on tap for Thursday and Friday at Vail Mountain:

I went to school at the University of Kansas - Rock Chalk Jayhawk! - and my first year working at Lodge at Lionshead was very excited when I sold reservations to a group of residents and doctors from KU Medical Center who wanted to go skiing over Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend in Vail. That was 1997. This group has returned every year since and has grown the ski trip into a full-fledged conference.

Snow conditions are a little drier than normal this season, and yes - even the locals have been complaining about it. However, you don't need new snow to have a beautiful day of skiing or riding. Took this photo about an hour ago riding up chair 4 (Mountaintop Express). Today was a no-gaiter (in the 30's), Colorado bluebird day and it was a fantastic day to be on the mountain.
