The Snow is Back & Better Than Ever!

Mother Nature has decided to grace us with lots of beautiful powder snow in recent weeks.  THIS is the type of winter we are used to and that we had been desperately missing this season.  Over my last two "weekends" (Sunday/ Monday) both days have been powder days - and I don't mean wimpy amounts of powder - I mean of the 8 to 11" each day variety.  It has snowed on a daily basis and we've only seen sunshine again the last couple of days.

How to See Vail Mountain Like a Local

This is such a great deal!  Adventure Sessions match you with a top guide and a small group of similarly skilled skiers and riders.  Here are the cool parts - you'll go places that you may not have been before, cut lift lines because Adventure Guides are also Vail Snowsports School instructors and pick up tips and technical information along the way.

Cool Free Things To Do in Vail

Vail has never claimed to be cheap.  As the largest single ski resort on the continent with endless world-class amenities to boot, it doesn't have to be.  However, there are still a few freebies to be had and they aren't lame freebies either.  Here are some of our picks:

Foodies Flock to Beaver Creek This Weekend

Bon Appetit Magazine is in town for the Beaver Creek Master Chef Classic again this year and it is going to be good!  Many of the smaller events are sold out, but tickets can still be had to a few of the signature events like the Master Chef Classic and Grand Tasting.  Here's the rundown:

It's Gay Ski Week in Vail

Following in the steps of one of its famous neighboring resorts, Vail hosts its first ever Gay Ski Week from January 27 - 31, 2010.  Activities will include the Vail Splash Club (Vail's version of the "Polar Bear Club"), Apres Ski Socials, 80's prom, awesome dining specials and more.   There will be many more entertaining events at the host hotel - Vail Plaza Club.

Epic Snowfall in Vail This Past Weekend

Snow has returned with a vengeance to Vail!  Sunday morning we woke up to 9 inches of fluff on Vail Mountain and it continued to snow all day for an additional 10 inches on Monday morning.  Needless to say the Lodge at Lionshead guests were very happy!  I skied Sunday and even with just 9 inches the conditions were incredibly different.  Groomed runs were covered in powder and runs that were not groomed were thigh-deep in some places.  It was AMAZING!  My group of friends and I had a ball and skied 'til our legs couldn't take it anymore.

National Safety Awareness Week at Vail & Beaver Creek

Both Vail and Beaver Creek are celebrating National Safety Awareness Week this week and there have been some pretty cool events on the mountains.  Have dreams of being a ski patroller?  Want to learn how to avoid injuries so you can spend more time on the hill?  Want to see an air ambulance helicopter up close and personal?  It's not too late - you still have two days to check it out and learn some great safety tips.  Here is what is on tap for Thursday and Friday at Vail Mountain:

KU Medical Center Conference a Success

I went to school at the University of Kansas - Rock Chalk Jayhawk! - and my first year working at Lodge at Lionshead was very excited when I sold reservations to a group of residents and doctors from KU Medical Center who wanted to go skiing over Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend in Vail.  That was 1997.  This group has returned every year since and has grown the ski trip into a full-fledged conference.

The Wailers Open FREE Concert Series Tonight

The annual Bud Light Street Beat Concert Series starts tonight in Vail Village with legendary reggae band The Wailers.  Locals and visitors alike flock to these Wednesday night events not only for the music, but also for the great prize give-aways!  This FREE concert begins at 6pm at Checkpoint Charlie in Vail Village.  Dress warm and bring your dancin' shoes!

No New Snow & It's Still a Beautiful Ski Day!

Snow conditions are a little drier than normal this season, and yes - even the locals have been complaining about it.  However, you don't need new snow to have a beautiful day of skiing or riding.  Took this photo about an hour ago riding up chair 4 (Mountaintop Express).  Today was a no-gaiter (in the 30's), Colorado bluebird day and it was a fantastic day to be on the mountain.
