Vail Arts Festival, Yo-Yo Ma, BBQ Bonanza and more…

My mom gets into town tonight for a little vacation with her daughters (we all live here) which means that I get to play tourist for the next week and a half with her. She couldn’t have picked a better time to come because there are so many wonderful, unique events going on and the weather is absolutely perfect. It’s going to be great!

Friday, it’s the first F.A.C. (that’s Friday Afternoon Club) of the summer at the top of Vail Mountain at Eagle’s Nest. Enjoy cocktails, burgers, hot dogs and FREE music courtesy of local band the Laughing Bones. If you are looking for something a little more classy, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival opens for the summer season at Ford Amphitheatre with none other than world-renowned cellist, Yo-Yo Ma. I have wanted to see him for the past several years – you could say he’s on my bucket list – but unfortunately, we’ve scheduled another commitment tomorrow night in Aspen and I cannot go. Ugh. Very disappointing and I am not ashamed to admit I am jealous of all of the folks who get to hear Yo-Yo Ma under the stars tomorrow night.

Saturday, the BBQ Bonanza takes place in Vail Village with local restaurants competing for the title of “Vail’s Best BBQ”. I could tell you my pick, but you really should go judge for yourself. Lionshead hosts the annual Vail Arts Festival all weekend. It’s so much fun to browse through the vendor tents and talk with the artists. You’ll find everything from paintings and photography to pottery and jewelry. You might even want to go big and purchase some fine art of your very own. If you feel like venturing over to Minturn, their weekly Farmers’ Market kicks off its summer season Saturday, as well. Or wait until Sunday for the Vail Farmers’ Market and Art Show.

Throughout the weekend, you may also want to check out the Vail Lacrosse Shoot Out, hike and bike on Vail Mountain (they are hauling bikes now) or hit the local links. What about rafting, fly fishing or hot air ballooning? It’s gonna be a beautiful weekend, so definitely get out there and enjoy all of the great events and activities available.
