Vail Airports: What Is the Best Way to Get to the Mountain?

If you’re traveling to Vail, you could be flying in from anywhere in the world. That means you might be asking yourself what the closest airport is to the mountain town. We break down everything you need to know about Vail airports, so you can plan a seamless and stress-free vacation.

Which of the Vail Airports Should I Fly Into?

Eagle County Regional Airport

Eagle County Regional Airport is about 35 miles west of Lodge at Lionshead. The drive typically takes about 35 to 40 minutes. If you are visiting Vail, this is by far the most convenient airport to fly into. The next closest airport is Aspen/Pitkin County Airport more than an hour and a half drive away. Many people also fly into Denver International Airport and either rent a car or take a shuttle. The ride can take anywhere from two to three hours. That’s a lot of extra time traveling when you could be flying into an airport that’s just over half an hour from Vail.

Airlines That Provide Direct Flights to Eagle County Airport

American Airlines, Delta, and United Airlines all provide direct flights to Eagle County Regional Airport. There are nonstop flights to the airport from more than 10 cities. Luckily, even if you can’t fly directly from one of the below cities, they are all major connecting airports. During the winter, the airlines offer nonstop flights from:

  • American: Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix
  • Delta: Atlanta
  • United: Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco

During the summer, the airlines offer nonstop flights from:

  • American: Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth
  • Delta: Atlanta
  • United: Denver

Local Tip: If you’re flying United into Denver, see if you can add one of the airline’s flights from Denver to Eagle Airport.

Denver International Airport

Although we recommend Eagle Regional Airport to save travel time, Denver International Airport is a great option for people looking for a more scenic route. It’s no secret that Colorado is one of the most beautiful states in the United States, and the Denver/Vail region is completely breathtaking. We can’t blame anyone for wanting to slow down a bit and take it as much of the stunning landscape as they can.
